Hawaii has a higher percentage of top-rated nursing homes than any other state in the country, according to a newly revised rating system by the federal government that includes tougher standards for evaluating long-term care facilities.

Derek Akiyoshi Named Regional Chief Executive Officer For The HHSC Oahu Region

Derek AkiyoshiHonolulu, Hawaii  — Derek Akiyoshi has been appointed regional chief executive officer for the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, Oahu Region.  He has served as interim CEO since December 2013.

Previously, Akiyoshi served as Administrator at Maluhia.   Akiyoshi also serves as the Vice Chair of the Healthcare Association of Hawaii (HAH) Long Term Care Division.

Leahi Hospital Receives 4-Plus Rating

Honolulu, Hawaii — Leahi Hospital has earned a 4-plus-star rating from caregiverlist.com The designation is the highest among all nursing homes in Honolulu.

61st Blossom Court Members Assist Nursing Home Residents Celebrate Bon Dance Event

Bon Dance EventHonolulu, Hawaii — The 2013 Hawaii Cherry Blossom Festival Court assisted Maluhia’s nursing home residents celebrate the annual Bon Dance event on Saturday, August 24, 2013. The Court helped to wheel chair the residents around the bon dance circle while encouraging them to sing as well as making dance motions with their hands.

Maluhia Administrator Derek Akiyoshi said, “Planning an event for our residents wheelchair bound and with limited diets required some ingenuity and planning, but I am very proud of the Court for assisting in the event that got the residents engaged and excited. They took time out of their weekend schedule to assist Maluhia staff, volunteers and the Hawaii Shin Kobu Kai performers.”

Maluhia Celebrates National Nursing Home Week

Nursing Home WeekHonolulu, Hawaii — In observance of National Nursing Home Week (NNHW), May 12-18, Maluhia hosted a series of events designed to enrich the relationships and contacts between residents, family and community members.

NNHW spotlights nursing home residents and staff and encourages all to celebrate those that make a positive difference in their lives every day. A supportive and caring environment, such as a nursing home, provides enrichment for our Kupuna, frail loved ones and families to continue growing, learning and sharing. The week also provided an opportunity to honor all those who contribute to our nursing homes.

Leahi Hospital Honors Four Centenarians

Four CentenariansHonolulu, Hawaii — Leahi Hospital, as part of National Nursing Home Week activities, May 12-18, recognized its oldest residents (long-term care patients).

The staff honored Florence Imai, who turned 103 years old on April 23, Yoshiko Fukuchi, who turned 101 years old on September 12, Evelyn Kuioka, who turned 100 years old on February 7, and Loretta Tanaka, who turned 100 years old on July 1.

Lani Tsuneishi Named Director of Nursing for Leahi Hospital

Lani TsuneishiHonolulu, Hawaii — Lani Tsuneishi, RN, MSN, has been appointed director of nursing for Leahi Hospital. She will oversee our facility’s nursing services departments.

Ms. Tsuneishi joined Leahi Hospital as an assistant director of nursing in February 2012, and most recently, served as acting director of nursing. Previously, she served as a registered nurse at the state Department of Health – Hawaii State Hospital in Kaneohe. Tsuneishi has over 30 years of healthcare and nursing experience having worked at Jones Convalescent Hospital, Children’s Hospital and the Department of Health, Immunization Department, Los Angeles, in addition to Kapiolani Children’s Medical Center.

Around the Leahi Hospital Campus in an Electric Vehicle

Electric VehicleHonolulu, Hawaii — The Maluhia-Leahi Hospital Foundation recently received an electric vehicle donation from Rachael Wong to support Leahi Hospital’s inter- and intra- campus transportation needs.

It took the Leahi Hospital Maintenance Department less than an hour to understand and appreciate the benefits of having a donated Global Electric Motor vehicle added to its existing fleet of vehicles.
